A Reflection Essay about Identity: Dominican Culture

Different kinds of reasons for migration involve a lot of experiences and the need for
having a lot of adaptive measures. The search for a better life, together with other reasons, causes
the need for a better desire towards adapting and growth (Flores np). Whether the reasons for
migration are positive or negative, the expected sequence of results is always the same, pointing
towards a life where everything works with the preference of other things. The challenges can
impact identity differently because of the shift in mentality and preferences, to sort the different
nature of the welcoming countries. The nature of activities that occur to welcome other states and
ideas can impact the desire and opportunity for a better life negatively (Chen 32). I have a
Dominican culture and I believe there is no reason to convert or congeal my identity for any
reason because of my pursuit for a better quality of life. Indeed, not every platform welcomes the
attachment to a person’s identity because the feeling of being a visitor also has its impacts. Yes, I
have faced both the advantages and disadvantages of having a Dominican identity. The two
cultures, between the American and Dominican are different, creating the unique state of having
to choose between the two forms of culture, what to pick or reject (Daniel np). In this article, I
have analyzed how certain aspects of identity and migration into the US have influenced the kind
of interaction and experiences I have developed.

The Dominican culture is a mixture of different forms of culture, with some being
associated to the colonialism period. Dominican culture constitutes the aspects of the American,
European and the Taino culture, which are the most common aspects of every form of interaction
and established principles (Chen 35). Ethic and racial have encompassed a lot concerning the
kind of behavior I portray because certain limitations exist on the kind and form of activities that
I can participate. However, in every instance of interaction and participation, I use the values in
identity to push past every state. The limitations in social amenities in Dominican culture is one
of the possible differences in the two forms of culture. I came to the US in 2016 because of the
desirable quality of life in the region. My daughter, who came with me to the country, has
adopted the American culture, which is not bad, but is unique compared to the identity she
portrays. The kind of advantages I have now are diverse compared to the disadvantages because
of the opportunities that have been created.
The US culture is a bit unique, making it easier to identify the kind of life that is lived
uniquely. The first difference is the lack of the traditional dance that I used in Dominican culture.
In the US, most of the dances change depending on the seasons, without the choice of a
particular type with certain experiences. Identity to the Dominican culture has create the void of
missing certain cultural practices and desires. There is the need for a better life, and the kind of
expectations have never been met, based on the desire to satisfy the traditional forms of life
(Daniel np). For example, as we approach the festive season, I have the desire to participate in
the Merengue Dance, but the kind of systems in the place have never established the desire.
However, I have met more advantages because of the changed forms of life. There are certain
practices that I can relate and compare, based on the improved forms. Baseball is one of the
cultural games in the Dominican culture, but is played in more improved forms in the US,

making the improvement channels in better states (Flores np). I have had the exposure to the
game, and a strong pull to identity has created a push on the kind of levels I can possibly reach.
The difference in the education system is pegged on an advantage, where the US culture
involves supporting the needy students, with a platform of continuing with their education. The
aspect is not in the Dominican Republic, where a lot of activities concerning the financial aid
programs lack (Chen 39). There is the need to develop better systems of trade, education and
other facilities. For example, I am now going to graduate, which appeared difficult at first in my
home country. In new countries, the differences can limit the levels of development that are
experienced, which explains the shift in identity. The impacts did not affect my pursuit for a
better life, which has been the most obvious reasons for my shift.
