Empowering Diabetes Care with Orems' Self-Care Model
The seamless implementation of nursing conceptual-theoretical frameworks facilitates the
provision of competent care at various stages ranging from wellness to illness continuum and
throughout the life span. Hence, it is necessary to determine the relevance of Orem's self-care
model among diabetic cases. For example, this study on diabetes is one of the world's most
common and complex disease conditions, showing how this knowledge can be used in real
practice. Self-care is another aspect that Orem's Self-care model describes the role played by
individuals who are suffering from chronic illnesses in overcoming the burden of caring for
themselves after experiencing self-care deficits. This model looks into what it is like for people
living with diabetes and will highlight possible nursing interventions that can be instituted
aiming at improving the health of the special group.
Orems' Self-Care Model
One of the most used concepts among nurses is the conceptual-theoretical model or
Orem's Self-Care Model, developed by Dorothea Orem. It stresses the fact that people do not
need anyone's assistance, as they are capable of doing self-care and managing their needs.
However, it asserts that people exercise control over their health. The Self-Care Model
comprises four main ideas, which include self-care requisites, self-care agency, and self-care
deficits. Self-care requisites are many things an individual does to live or grow well.
The term self-care agency refers to an individual's propensity or capacity to participate in
such self-care activities. This model concentrates on patient empowerment, allowing partnership
between patients and professionals on deciding issues related to health. It provides a framework
for nurses to assess interventions meant to promote self-care in persons and those with problems

related to self-care (Marques et al., 2022). The self-care deficit theory is one of the major parts of
the model that determines when people require assistance in meeting their basic needs.
Health Effects of Diabetes.
Possibly the greatest healthcare issue in many countries nowadays is diabetes, which is
probably the most demanding situation. High levels of blood sugar as a result of ineffective
manufacture of and utilization of insulin. Diabetes is a major global health issue, and the rate at
which it has risen should not be underestimated. Such lifestyle, poor diets, and genetics mainly
contribute to this rise. Diabetes goes beyond personal health, and its effects extend way past the
affected patient, including family members, friends, and broader society. The outcome appears in
many forms, including higher healthcare expenditure, decreased quality of living, as well as
severe complication cases like cardiovascular disorders, kidney failure, and neuropathy as argued
by Zurita-Cruz et al. (2018). However, the study dwells on a particular sector of the population,
type two diabetic patients, as the selected vulnerable group and examine the practicability of
nursing theories as applied to diabetes care.
Lived Experiences of Individuals with Diabetes
Living with diabetes is a challenging and ongoing fight characterized by constant self-
care that requires one's control. It is necessary to hear their stories to understand their lived
experience. These stories depict the everyday experiences of people with diabetes – their highs
and lows. Many people living with diabetes talk about this daily consciousness of blood sugar
level, restricted eating habits, strict drug administration, and frequent visits to the doctor's office
as the most critical parts of their lives. The individuals observe an authoritarian self-monitoring
regime by taking regular glucose readings and correcting any discrepancies regarding their
insulin dosages or oral medications according to Marques et al. (2022). They also watch closely

the food they eat, including balancing carbohydrates as well as taking healthy diets to control the
levels of glucose in their bodies.
However, people with diabetes still encounter multiple difficulties in trying to follow
such a regimen. These are issues of psychological, emotional, and practical concerns. Diabetes
management can cause much distress, leading, in some cases, to stress, anxiety, and depression.
